Shaped and shape memory probes are specialized semi-rigid inspection tools built for applications where a fixed or self-deploying geometry is required. These probes are manufactured from special metal alloys that can hold a programmed shape after undergoing a heating process. The shape can be deployed directly or kept straight for insertion by using an outer sheath, which is then retracted at the inspection site.
Shape memory probes are not recommended for general-purpose use because the alloy construction has a thicker wall that can limit illumination capabilities, and the material cost is higher. However, in the right applications, shape memory designs can serve as a cost-effective alternative to more complex and fragile articulating scopes.
In addition to shape memory probes, conventional semi-rigid probes can be permanently bent into customer-specified geometries. These fixed-shape designs retain their bend and do not change shape during operation, providing a durable and reliable inspection solution for repeat applications requiring consistent geometry.
